The Salvation Army Kroc Center opened its doors this week to charter members as the organization makes its finishing touches on the facility.

The aquatics center will include, a water slide, lap lanes, and a lazy river - the main focus of this area is to teach kids how to swim.

The $25 million complex has been years in the making, pushing back the grand opening dates for programming and construction tweaks.

“The delays were not due to financial issues and did not impact the local salvation army or local money that was contributed,” said major commander for Salvation Army in Memphis Mark Woodcock early last year.

According to an email sent to charter members, the construction contractor is still making final touches on the building’s interior and pool.

Public relations manager for the Salvation Army Memphis Ellen Westbrook said all 30 Kroc Centers in the United States remain a place for recreation, education, worship and arts as the visionary donor requested. In 2004, Joan Kroc donated $1.5 billion of matching funds for the construction of all centers.

“It is something Memphis can proud of having a part in,” Westbrook said.

Early access is available for Kroc Center Charter Members ends Friday, February 22, 2013. Modified times are: 6 a.m. – 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
