Photo Gallery | Overton Square before and after rebirth—also what's next
Nearly two years ago, Loeb Properties and Memphis City Council members gathered in Playhouse on the Square to tell community members that a $31.1 million theater arts district would be beneficial to Midtown.
At that meeting Robert Loeb said the nostalgic Overton Square was full of attractive buildings that just needed some "TLC" and tenants.
After months of ongoing renovations, new shops and more than a dozen restaurants now call the square their home. Some of those establisments being Bar Louie, Local Midtown, Chiwawa, and YOLO. The before-the-renovation stables include Memphis Pizza Cafe, Lenny's, Bari Ristorante, Le Chardonnay, The Bayou, Golden India and Boscos Squared. Other easily accessible bars or eateries are Side Street Grill and Bogie's Delicatessen.
The Attic and Delta Grove Healing Arts are a couple of new shops that sprouted up this year. Although by the number of "coming soon" signs lining the sidewalks, it's clear to anyone taking a walk in the square that much more is to come.
"We have a yoga studio and we have Breakaway Running coming," said Elizabeth Berglund who is helping the redevelopment with Loeb Properties in this video report. "I think the proximity to Overton Park and the bike lanes on Madison make it a really attractive place for wellness and fitness."
Bikram Yoga Memphis, Gould's Salon, Sweet Noshings, Robata Ramen & Yakitori Bar, and Babalu Tacos & Tapas will soon be the new kids on the block.
All the while new outdoor artwork and murals brighten up the side of buildings.
Recently, a developer has taken interest in the French Quarter Inn.
The 450-space parking garage doubling as a water-retention center opened the first week in October.
As millions of dollars and Memphis pride sink into the rebirth of Overton Square, the iconic intersection at Madison Avenue and Cooper Street continues to take shape.
"I'd say this fall we'll see a pretty together and hopping Overton Square even more so than it is [in the summer]," said Berglund.
