Farmers market closing doors

The Midtown Farmers Market on Union will close its doors for good on Saturday, August 6.

To clear out remaining merchandise, everything in the market will be 50 percent off on Friday and Saturday.

The Midtown Farmers Market is located at 1632 Union Avenue.

Beware retail credit card offers during sales tax holiday

Go ahead! Save a bundle this weekend on clothes, school supplies and computers when Tennessee drops its sales tax on those items from August 5 through August 7.

But Thomas Nitzsche of ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions warned shoppers should shy away from that smiling retail employee who approaches you with a clipboard, offering the store's credit card with discounts for signing up.

To keep or kill, your landline phone

The landline phone just made the same list as the Trout Cod, the Maccoa Duck and the Altai Weasel.

The endangered species list.

In the age of unlimited long distance, texting and messaging cell plans, the landline's on life support.

Yet Josh Elledge, Chief Executive "Angel" of SavingsAngel.com, said there's an argument for keeping your landline. Actually, four:

* GREATER RELIABILITY. "Particularly if your cell phone doesn’t get great coverage at home," said Elledge. "The argument can be made for either side regarding reliability in a power outage. Personally, my home phones are cordless - so a power outage would leave me unable to use them unless plugged into to a generator - or battery backup. Still, many people believe that non-powered landline phones are the most reliable method of phone communication."

It's your safety net, your "in case of emergency" card.

But your credit card may end up at the center of your vacation crisis if you don't follow the advice of Ben Woolsey, director of marketing and consumer research for CreditCards.com.

These are Woolsey's five worst credit card goofs while on vacation -- and what to do to avoid them:

GOOF #1 - YOU DIDN'T NOTIFY YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY ABOUT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS. "Unless you call your bank in advance, your card could be shut down or flagged for fraud and rendered unusable," said Woolsey.

Solution: Call your card's customer service line and let a representative know you may use your credit card while on vacation and to mark your account for anticipated charges at or near that destination.

Memphis hosts Natural Hair Expo

On July 16, Memphis will host its first Natural Hair Care Expo.

The Tennessee Natural Hair Care and Wellness Expo will be a fun-filled event with vendors, workshops and classes, held at the Memphis Airport Hotel and Conference Center (2240 Democrat Road) and will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Natural hair is taking over the world and this conference is a part of that phenomenon, showcasing stylists, fashion, natural hair models and beauty and wellness products.

Driving electric in Tennessee

Tennessee is one of a handful of states taking part in a project to build charging stations for electric vehicles.

In Tennessee, the project is focused on the cities of Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis and Chattanooga. The project plans to deploy approximately 2,500 residential, commercial, and Blink DC fast charging stations in Tennessee, providing close to 425 miles of connected EV infrastructure. The layout of the charging infrastructure is designed to encourage consumer adoption of electric and provide transportation corridors between them to allow the electric vehicle to travel beyond its charge radius.

Midtown Crye-Leike office to close

Crye-Leike Realtors co-founder and president Dick Leike has confirmed the company plans to close its Midtown office because of slumping sales.

The office at 2220 Union should close by the end of July. The city’s largest real estate agency subleases the building’s upper floor after selling the building more than five years ago.

Crye-Leike did have plans to build a new Midtown office on Madison at Barksdale, where Anderton’s Restaurant once stood. But after demolishing the old building there, the agency never started construction. “Our original intention was to keep our office where it is until we could get a new building underway at Madison and Barksdale,” Leike said. “And so far the market for going out and building a new building is just not there.”
