Strickland, Carson honored for servant’s heart

City Councilman Jim Strickland told a sold-out luncheon at the University of Memphis what happened after he was notified that he’d been named a 2013 recipient of the Bobby Dunavant Public Service Award.

“I looked at my reflection in the mirror,” Strickland recalled talking to himself and saying,”I knew Bobby Dunavant. Bobby was a friend of mine.” Referring to his reflection, “you sir, are no Bobby Dunavant.”

The crowd burst into applause for Strickland’s humility, spirit of service and recollection of Dunavant who spent 21 years as Shelby County Probate Court Clerk. Dunavant never had a private office, working side by side with staff and lawyers throughout 40 years as an employee of Shelby County government.

New grocer, new plans in Cooper-Young

One midtown grocer is getting ready to make some changes.

Cooper-Young is home to a revamped convenience store that will offer fresh produce, local beef and an espresso bar.

The store is at the corner of Evelyn and Cooper.

The new owner wants to bring fresher alternatives to a store that use to only sell beer, candy, and sodas.

He plans to build a patio to hold concerts.

The store will eventually be a place for artists to display their work.
