Snowden school hosting MCS surrender meeting

Shelby County Commissioner Melvin Burgess will host an informational meeting on the Memphis City Schools charter surrender.

City councilman Jim Strickland and MCS school board member Dr. Jeff Warren will also attend the meeting on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Snowden’s cafeteria.

MCS parents, councilman meet to discuss charter controversy

Memphis City Councilman Shea Flinn will meet with several groups of Memphis City Schools parents to discuss the possibility of the system abandoning its charter.


The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m.on Dec. 17, at Lindenwood Christian Church, 2400 Union Ave.

Judge denies motion to stop CVS construction

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A judge denied a motion Thursday that would have stopped work on the Union Avenue Methodist Church site for CVS.

The ruling paves the way for the site to become home to a new CVS Pharmacy.

The church has been vacant since its remaining members merged with St. Luke's United Methodist Church on South Highland in June.

Local preservationists, led by Memphis Heritage, fought the proposed construction.  They said CVS's plans violated laws.

Deberry to challenge Tenn. House minority leader

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - At least two Democratic lawmakers have said they will challenge House Minority Leader Gary Odom of Nashville for the leadership post.

House Finance Chairman Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley and Tennessee Black Caucus Chairman John Deberry of Memphis have said they will vy for post, which Odom was elected to last session.
