New baby at the Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo has welcomed a new baby elk to the family.

The baby elk was born June 21st and was born on exhibit at the Teton Trek to proud parents, "Big John" and "22855".

Both parents came to the zoo in late 2009 when the Teton Trek opened.

Elk calves are born weighing about 30 pounds and have a spotted coat.  The coat is used as camouflage to protect the elk against predators in the wild.

Zookeepers say the new calf is a girl and she has already started bonding with her mother.

The new baby has a pink ear tag and you can see her on exhibit at Teton Trek.  She has not been named yet.
