Overton Square undergoes major renovation | News

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Big changes are underway at Overton Square.

The once popular entertainment district is again busy with activity as construction crews work to transform the area.

For the past several days, construction workers and equipment have been turning what was once a rundown parking lot into an upscale parking garage, complete with a water detention area designed to ease drainage problems in Midtown.

People who work and live in Overton Square are excited about the renovations planned for the area.

"Oh it's fantastic they are finally talking Overton Square and remodeling it and getting it up and running again. Really should create a fantastic theater district here," said Clay Shelton, who works in the area.

City officials and developers are spending millions to help revitalize Overton Square.

"It's fantastic for the area its more businesses its more people coming in getting to see part of Memphis that those of us who have grown up here know and love," said Shelton.

Plans include turning an building into a new Five Guys burger joint. Another restaurant called the Local Gastropub is opening nearby in the old Yosemite Sam's building. A coffee shop and bakery are also being looked for the area.
