Armed crook robs CBU student on campus | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) – Christian Brothers University has a gated campus with guards posted, but CBU police are searching for a man with a gun after a stick-up outside an on-campus dorm.
Known for its bell tower, Catholic setting and peaceful vibe, CBU is suddenly on alert.
"First, I was like, stunned," said CBU student Ryan Hancock.
Tuesday night, a stranger with a gun got away after he robbed a student who was walking back to her dorm.
Police believe it was a random attack.
"He approached from behind and demanded her money and any belongings of value," said John Lotrionte, CBU's campus safety director.
Coincidentally, the robbery happened the same day the TBI released its campus crime report. The report shows that crimes are up on campuses statewide.
From 2010 to 2011, TBI statistics show about 300 more crimes on college campuses across Tennessee, that's a 4.2 percent increase.
"Really, college campuses tend to be safe places," said Kristin Helm, of the TBI. "Percentage-wise, when you look at the number of students on campuses to the number of crimes committed, it's a pretty low ratio."
CBU student Ryan Hancock said he has only one area of concern with security on campus.
"I think at times they do a good job. I just wish it could be a little better, especially in the back... where the young lady was robbed," he said.
CBU police say the 77 acre campus is safe and they hope the bell soon tolls on the crook with the gun that has the small school on alert.
"The only description that we have is a young male black, early 20's, well-dressed," said Lotrionte.
Investigators don't think the robber is a student and ask anyone who can help solve this case to call campus police at 901-321-3550.
