Shelby Co. organizations, residents fight HIV/AIDS | Health

Many organizations and people in Shelby County are taking a part in the cause on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

According to the Shelby County Health Department, 83 percent of residents living with HIV/AIDS in 2011 were black.

That statistic is partially why Planned Parenthood offered free rapid HIV testing at the Getwell Community Center Thursday afternoon.

Free community HIV counseling and testing provides many benefits to the Mid-South community, according to Planned Parenthood.

Men and women who know their HIV status can better protect themselves and their partners from the virus that causes AIDS.

Early and frequent testing for HIV also allows HIV-positive individuals to begin viral suppressive treatments sooner, which can let them lead longer, healthier lives.
