Mayor Luttrell continues family life series with Just Care Family Network

Shelby County Government continues to partner with faith-based organizations and other groups to host Mayor Mark Luttrell’s Family Life Series. Representatives from Shelby County Government and other agencies will speak at Keel Avenue Baptist Church during a five month series of presentations.

On May 16, the CDC issued its first comprehensive report on children's mental health describing federal activities that track children’s mental disorders in the United States.

Tonight’s series, led by Just Care Family Network Executive Director Dr. Altha Stewart, will aim at “Helping Children and Youth Affected by Crime and Violence”

New spray schedule for May

The Shelby County Health Department (SCDH) has received confirmation of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus (WNV) within the areas of ZIP code 38115. Mosquitoes carrying WNV have been previously found in ZIP codes 38018, 38104, 38109, 38116, 38122, 38127, 38133, 38125, 38017, and 38141.

Since April the SCHD Vector Control Program has treated areas by applying larvicides to standing bodies of water. As an additional precaution, the SCHD will also conduct truck mounted spraying of EPA approved insecticides weather permitting, in portions specific ZIP codes according to the following schedule:

Tuesday, May 21

8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

ZIP Codes: 38115, 38117, 38118, 38119, 38125, 38141

Wednesday, May 22

8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

ZIP Codes: 38053, 38108, 38128, 38134, 38135

MIFA 'Meals on Wheels' needs your vote to win FedEx grant

The Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) is in the running to win a grant for its Meals on Wheels program, but the nonprofit needs your help to win.

According to MIFA, Memphis was declared the hunger capital of the country in 2011.

The Meals on Wheels program delivers 1,800 hot lunches each day to seniors in the community who are unable to leave their homes.

Now, MIFA is one of several nonprofits competing for a grant from FedEx.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, FedEx is sponsoring a Global Month of Service. The shipping giant is encouraging its own team members to team up with nonprofits to make a difference in their communities.

The "Friends of the MIFA Maniacs" are hoping for your votes in order to give the Meals on Wheels program a boost so it can make an even bigger impact on the Memphis community.

Planned Parenthood Celebrates National Women's Health Week with Free Services

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is celebrating National Women’s Health Week by offering some free services at its health center at 2430 Poplar Avenue, during National Women’s Health Week, May 13-17.

National Women’s Health Week is a weeklong national health observance designed to empower women to make their health a top priority. All women are encouraged to take the following simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life:

Get an annual checkup
Schedule recommended preventive screenings
Practice safe sex to prevent sexually transmitted infections
Use birth control when appropriate to prevent unintended pregnancies.

PPGMR is proud to help women achieve these goals by offering the following free services in its health center at 2430 Poplar Avenue:

March of Dimes celebrates 75 years

The Tennessee chapter of the March of Dimes held a party to celebrate its 75th anniversary today. March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Follow the link to donate and to read more about the national organization.

CBU makes history

May 4th marked a historical moment for The Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program at Christian Brothers University. 31 members of the Class of 2014 were given the traditional student consultative White Coat made possible through the support of anonymous donors. The inaugural Physical Assistant White Coat Ceremony was a first for Memphis and marked a rite of passage for the students from didactic classroom and lab instruction to practical clinical training. “This was a monumental event for CBU and the Memphis community which was evidenced by the number of individuals who joined us for the event,” said Dr. Mark Scott, Director of the Physician Assistant Studies Program. “The support of the program by physicians and individuals has been overwhelming and is reflective of the University’s impact on this community.
