2013 Gibson 5K Fuels All New Green Machine Mobile Farmer's Market | Community Spirit
A joyous celebration on Sunday, May 5 launched the latest effort to bring better nourishment to people who lack proper access to fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. The Green Machine Mobile Food Market will begin making its rounds in early June. The renovated city bus was parked outside St. Patrick Church across from FedEx Forum on May 5th as an exuberant crowd cheered its unveiling. Community leaders united with church members to cut the ribbon and welcome the new nutrition bus to the menu of other efforts aimed at making low income Memphians healthier people via their diets. You’ll have the chance to tour the Green Machine at the Gibson Guitar 5K Run-Walk coming up on Saturday afternoon, June 15.
Runners intuitively know they need to fuel the body properly if they hope to make it to the finish line or notch a new persona record. If you come to the Gibson Guitar 5K Run-Walk, 7 o’clock, Saturday evening, June 15, 2013 you can kick the tires and take a tour of a new mobile market that may help improve the nutrition and health of many Memphians, runners and non-runners alike! The all new Green Machine Mobile Food Market will be housed at St. Patrick Community Outreach, Inc., beneficiary of the funds raised by the 17th annual Gibson 5K. Dr. Kenneth Reardon, the professor who directs the University of Memphis Graduate School of City and Urban Planning, says research by his students revealed a glaring lack of fresh food in vast sections of the city. “There are wide swaths of our community with no full service supermarkets or easy access to quality fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods,” Reardon said. The Green Machine aims to be an oasis in these so-called “food deserts.” Gifted artisans, carpenters united with neighborhood children to help transform the surplus MATA bus into a rolling farmer’s market. The bus will make three stops a day, five days a week to sell fresh produce, rice, beans and pasta all supplied by the Easy-Way Produce Stores at affordable prices. This is the latest nutrition ministry housed at St. Patrick Community Outreach, Inc. The non-profit agency produces delicious meals for hungry people each Sunday with help from friends at Redeemer Presbyterian and other churches. Hundreds of hungry people from the Vance Ave. neighborhood break bread at 1 o’clock each Sunday afternoon via outreach programs like More Than a Meal and Soup on Sunday. With the help of friends at Woodland Presbyterian and Evergreen Presbyterian, St. Patrick also operates one of the city’s largest food pantries where needy families screened by MIFA come to collect emergency groceries. In addition, the agency gets down and dirty each Spring planting the Common Ground Community Garden located at 276 S. Lauderdale where fresh vegetables are growing even as you read this magazine! Families from the neighborhood harvest and enjoy these healthy foods and children get a hands-on experience of how to grow a garden.
