Celebrating Memphis as a Risk City during Global Entrepreneurship Week

Celebrating Memphis as a Risk City during Global Entrepreneurship Week

Some say Memphis is a city that turns adversity into opportunity, and embraces risk as the path to progress.

A city that mitigates risks for today’s bold, game changing entrepreneurs so that – like FedEx, Stax and Holiday Inn – they can birth the new, drive economic growth, create jobs and change the world.

That's why LaunchMemphis recognized Memphis as a risk city this week.

MEMfix: Community driven urbanism effort, first stop Crosstown

MEMfix: Community driven urbanism effort, first stop Crosstown

A new initiative for urban redesign and redevelopment makes its first stop on a couple of blocks along Cleveland Street this November. It will demonstrate the economic and community potential of the crosstown area.

The one-day event called MEMfix will fill empty store fronts with businesses, include a street festival with food vendors and live performances, feature pedestrian-focused street improvements, pop-up retail and family-friendly activities.

But executive director of the Memphis Regional Design Center Chooch Pickard said it’s way more than a street festival, it’s an experiment to transform an urban area.

"We know there is potential, and we want other people to see that as well," said Pickard.

Memphis music legends decorate Chisca

Memphis music legends decorate Chisca

Some Memphis students' art will decorate the historic Chisca hotel in downtown Memphis during renovations.

You can see some examples of the art being used from Saint Louis Catholic school.

The Chisca is where Elvis first played live on the air from the radio station studios in the building in 1954.

The pictures all pay homage in some way to that legacy.

One picture shows a hound dog Another shows Rufus Thomas, the soul singing legend.

An unveiling ceremony of all 30 art banners will be held on Saturday, October 27 from 2 -3 pm at The Hotel Chisca.
