Joe Birch celebrates 35 years with Action News 5

It has been 35 years since Joe's first day on the job as of Monday.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - When many Memphians think of the Bluff City they think of Elvis, barbecue, and now the Grizzlies – but many also think of Action News 5's Joe Birch. A young Joe Birch stepped into the Action News 5 newsroom 35 years ago this May to bring viewers all of the latest and breaking news.

One of Action News 5's lead anchors became a permanent part of the Action News Five family just a few years after being an eager newsroom intern.

It has been 35 years since Joe's first day on the job as of Monday.

His familiar face, and hair, coming into hundreds of Mid-South homes every night from the anchor desk and beyond.

Career accomplishments include carrying the Olympic Torch on its way to Atlanta, and sending well wishes from Memphis to the Pope – to list a couple.

Joe has not slowed down in the years since the station celebrated his 30th anniversary.

The Memphis Area Association of Governments or (MAAG) was awarded the International Communicator Award of Distinction for the regional marketing campaign Day Trippin’. The campaign promotes unique attractions within a day car drive from Memphis.  The Communicator Award is presented annually by the International Academy of Visual Arts.

“The greatest show on earth,” is this year’s theme for The Memphis Children’s Theatre Festival. The festival kicks off this weekend and is a family friendly event that will include crafts, dancing, games, and circus snacks. The pay-what-you-can event will take place on the campus of Rhodes College in the McCoy Theatre, May 24th and May 25th.

Mid-South participates in National Cereal Drive

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, and the Mid-South Food Bank, will work together for the second year to help stamp out childhood hunger. The annual Professional Nursing Council’s Cereal Drive, helps to fill local food banks by donating boxes of healthy cereals. “These boxes of cereal will help feed breakfast to children in the Mid-South,” said Paula Dycus, Administrative Director of Professional Practice & Research at Le Bonheur. Dycus added more than 17 percent of the Tennessee state population lives in food insecure households, according to Feed America. Every box of cereal will help feed 10 children.

Le Bonheur pledges to collect 350,000 servings, that is approximately 35,000 boxes of cereal. Hospital staff, volunteers, and community members are invited to help Le Bonheur reach the goal.

53th Anniversary of sit-in celebrated in a drug store

A group of Mid-South students helped make history 53 years ago. They participated in one of the first sit-in movements in Memphis.

Five LeMoyne-Owen College students, sat-in at the Walgreens in downtown off Main Street.

Grace Austin Meacham was one of those students.

She said although waitress would not serve them and the managers told them the store was closed.

The group of students continued to sit and read their books peacefully.

"They told us that there was a bomb threat," said Meacham.  "That we had to leave there was a bomb threat, but we continued to sit. We actually sat there 3 hours before the police came and we were told were under arrest."

The concerts showcase a mix of local talent with a broad spectrum of music genres each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in June, July and August. 

The Gazeebo is right at the intersection of Cooper and Young.

Law firm sponsors new Mid-South race series starting at zoo

In the space of 41 days, some of the fastest runners in the Mid-South will have the opportunity to race for the M-Town Crown. Race directors of four evening races have united to create the M-Town Race Series.

“It’s a good idea,” said Bob Kirk, an attorney at the forty lawyer firm Farris Bobango that stepped up to become title sponsor the all new  running series.
