A break in the action

Most of Memphis woke up wet Monday morning, after heavy rains overnight.

The video above was recorded during a relative break in the rain.  Still, you can see how water was still pooling along the side of Union Avenue as the water subsided.

Do you have pictures of this morning's rain?  Send them to My 5 at my5@wmctv.com.

Coyote attacks on humans are rare, expert says

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - She was known as 'Mean Kitty,' but the attitude of a cat living in Central Gardens didn't save her recently from a brutal attack.  Mean Kitty's owner, Suzette Bond, says she was killed on her front porch by what appeared to be coyote.

Attacks on pets have neighbors worried that people are next.

"Because if a person gets attacked, most of them I think they carry rabies. That could be really dreadful for an individual," Bond said.

Wildlife Control Expert Carl Hirsheider says coyotes are typically on the prowl at dawn and dusk.

"Coyotes are one of the most difficult wildlife to deal with on the planet," Hirsheider said. "They are very smart, acclimate to us very well, and are very difficult to control."

Animal experts say coyotes could be killing Midtown cats

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A number of cats in the Central Gardens area have been brutally attacked and killed in the past several days.  Pet owners said a pack of wild dogs is on the loose, but animal experts said the attacks could be coyotes.

Last week, Jim Bailey interrupted a pack of wild dogs attacking a neighborhood cat outside his home in Central Gardens.

Board rejects proposal to demolish Midtown church

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Land Use Control Board rejected a proposal Thursday to demolish a historic Midtown church to build a CVS Pharmacy.

For June West, Executive Director of Memphis Heritage, the Board's vote to reject the proposed demolition of Union Avenue Methodist Church was welcome news.

"We're grateful," West said. "We're happy."

West's group has been requesting that CVS pull their plans to tear down the church with the hope of saving the 100 year old structure.
