Back to the books for Rhodes students

Students at Rhodes College are starting off the fall semester with a special ceremony. Here's more information from the school:

Rhodes College’s opening convocation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Evergreen Presbyterian Church (across from the campus on University Street) beginning at 3:30 p.m. The program convenes the Rhodes community for its 162nd academic year and welcomes the Class of 2014.

Dr. Gordon Bigelow, associate professor of English and 2010 recipient of the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching, will address the entering class.

Also at the opening convocation, Dr. Michael Drompp, dean of the faculty and vice president for academic affairs, will present the Jameson M. Jones Award for Outstanding Faculty Service.

Rock out for charity

City Shelter Announces New Hours

Starting last month, the Mephis Animal Shelter instituted new operating hours. The shelter opens at 10 a.m. and closes as late as 7 p.m. some weekenights.

Two boys charged with throwing rocks off overpass

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two boys were charged with throwing boulders and rocks off an overpass in Midtown Memphis.

The children, ages 11 and 15, are accused of breaking several windshields Wednesday near the intersection of Union and Poplar Avenue.

Verizon Hosts Emergency Planning Seminar

The Verizon Preparedness Planning Summit to help business owners get ready for the unexpected 
 
Verizon Wireless is teaming up with the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, the Greater Memphis Chamber and the Memphis Business Journal to offer small business owners a one-day summit on how to prepare their businesses for unexpected disasters and emergencies. The Verizon Preparedness Planning Summit will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the Holiday Inn on the University of Memphis campus, located at 3700 Central Ave.
The summit will include several workshops throughout the day, and keynote speaker Andrew Mitchell of the U.S.

Memphis Black Arts Alliance presents "Smoldering Fires"

Memphis Black Arts Alliance’s Arts-A-Fire Youth Theater Troupe will present the second play in their 2010-2011 season on September 17-19.   “Smoldering Fires,” is a drama by African American author and playwright Kermit Frazier.  Through the story of two unlikely friends, the play applies the ideals and struggles of the civil rights movement to contemporary life.  Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, September 17-18 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 19 at Evergreen Theatre.   Tickets are $15, $12 for MBAA members and $10 for children under 14 and groups of 10 or more.
