Consolidation hot topic in suburbs

The possible consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County governments is causing a group that normally focuses solely on the Lakeland government to reach outside its city limits.

A Political Action Committee called Partnership Lakeland will hold a consolidation forum on Tuesday, Sept 21 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at First Baptist Church in Lakeland.

From the press release:

Pets get blessings at Immaculate Conception

Get your animals all gussied up in their Sunday best and take them to The Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Oct. 3 for the annual blessing of the pets.

Here’s some background information on the celebration from a press release:

St. Francis is the patron saint for the protection of animals. He was a lover of all creation and a champion of justice. Each day, our pets bless us with unconditional love, devotion, and joy. Every year on his feast day (the day of his death in 1226,) many people of faith around the world host services where animals are blessed.

The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. and the blessings are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

Local quilters get spotlight in gallery

If you’re interested in quilting, here’s an event that’s right up your alley.

Here’s the release:

The Village Quilting Group met in January 2010 for the first time under the tutelage of master quilter Sandra Taylor. Quilting Group members Ibtisam Salih, Eva Cotton and Margarette Louiseau had never sewn or quilted before but have since produced lovely wall hangings. In May, Ms. Taylor led a children’s workshop where neighborhood children painted their original designs on squares of fabric. New quilter, Ibtisam Salih, assembled and stitched the squares together and quilted them.

The children’s quilt, along with quilting works from the Village Quilting Group will be on exhibit at the Caritas Village through the month of September. Three quilts are on loan from Onie Johns, Caritas Village Director. The Shelby County Links quilt is on loan from quilter and Link, Debra Davis Higgins.

Here’s the information from the city:

A few things you should know about tailgating on Tiger Lane:

Tailgaters must make sure that all of their tailgating equipment/belongings fit into their assigned spaces as not to infringe upon other patrons, drive lanes, walkways or adjacent tailgating spots.
