Grant awarded to Rhodes College

Rhodes college is one of 34 institutions in the United States receiving a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

That money will allow Rhodes to partner with the Memphis Public Library, the National Civil Rights Museum and other community partners to create the Memphis Coalition for Cultural Heritage.

The goal of the new coalition will be to engage communities in preserving and telling the stories of their neighborhoods as part of a dialogue to address past and present social inequities and their impact on Memphis and the Mid-South.

The grant will build on Rhodes' Crossroads to Freedom initiative.

Established in 2006, Crossroads is a digital library of oral history interviews and other primary sources related to the civil rights era as well as the cultural history of Memphis.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Zookeepers at the Memphis Zoo believe one of their polar bears may be pregnant.

The Memphis Zoo's Tiffany Langston said Haley, the zoo's 700 pound female polar bear, is picking up weight and showing other signs of being an expectant mother.

If Haley is pregnant, Langston said, she is likely about five months along.

"We are pretty sure - not 100 percent positive - but pretty sure that she is pregnant," Langston said. "This will be her first. She will be a first time mom."
