United Housing celebrates 2,010th home buyer

United Housing, Inc. has reached a major milestone in its history, and invites the community to participate in the organization's celebration.

After 16 years in operation, the nonprofit organization, which advocates for affordable homeownership in Memphis and West Tennessee, has helped its 2,010th client purchase a home through United Housing’s services.

Vince and Irma Henderson purchased their home after attending homebuyer education classes, obtaining a loan from United Housing and purchasing one of the many vacant properties that United Housing has worked to rehabilitate in neighborhoods across the city.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Not every neighbor who lives up the street from Backstreet Memphis is glad to see the club on the cusp of permanent closure.

"Unless there's something else going on that I don't know about," said Coeita Gallagher.  "I haven't heard of anything going on at Backstreet that doesn't go on at every other bar in Memphis."

But police say pervasive problems led them back last weekend.

"On Saturday, November 6, 2010, OCU raided Backstreet," said MPD Director Larry Godwin during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Fans upset about tailgating fee in Tobey Park

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Over the weekend, as the Tennessee Volunteers gouged the Memphis Tigers 50 to 14, football fans accused the city of Memphis of gouging tailgaters.

Tiger supporter Andrew Holmes said he was surprised when an attendant asked him for five dollars to tailgate in Tobey Park.

"They saw, 'Hey, we've got a thousand cars,'" he said. "Five bucks a head...it's a quick way to make a buck."

Holmes said tailgating in Tobey Park has a place in his heart because of his parents.  He was surprised when he was asked to pay to tailgate, when he could only stay for a small portion of Saturday's game.

"Five dollars is five dollars, and it's really not that big a deal in the scheme of things, but it's just the principle of the matter," he said. "Why now?"

MCS presents district-wide ThinkShow!

Since its debut in November 2008, the impact and popularity of ThinkShow has grown exponentially.

The Fall ThinkShow is Thursday, Nov. 11. Its purpose: teaching students to think outside the book.

Standardized testing can make it more challenging for educators to fully determine the unique abilities of each student. To better measure these talents, Memphis City Schools developed ThinkShow, to give students an opportunity to excel in areas that may not be captured in the traditional school format.
