MCS teacher fired from job after 26 years speaks out about inequalities

With signs that read stop the madness, teachers protesting said they are frustrated and concerned about the upcoming school merger.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Several Memphis City schools teachers braved the heat to send a strong message to those inside Memphis City and Shelby County School boards.

Former MCS teacher Jacqueline Harrison got the attention of a lot of drivers as she stood and waved at passer-bys for hours Wednesday morning.

Harrison taught for 26 years at Wooddale High and said she was fired last year, even though she had tenure.

"I am without a job right now, have been for one year with no insurance benefits and an applicant for food stamps," said Harrison.

Harrison was just one of 120 teachers fired last year in an effort to increase school system effectiveness.

She said she was never given any warning that her performance was below the standard.

Now, she is protesting and fighting for those who have either been fired or excessed.

Surveillance footage captures vandal destroying vintage phone booth

Thieves stole an iPad, laptop, and a camera by breaking Chris Bonatti's window.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Neighbors in a Midtown community are fed up after a recent string of crimes targeted porches, cars, homes, and even a neighborhood landmark.

Some might say the occasional theft or break-in is just part of living in Midtown, but residents along Central Avenue say they have never had to deal with it before and they do not plan to start now.

The vintage phone booth that once stood in front of the Second Hand Rose Antiques store was not even safe.

Surveillance video shows a car repeatedly backing into the phone booth that stood on the store's corner for 30 years.

"The thing is cast iron. To knock it over you have to put in some effort," said Charles Bechtel, Second Hand Rose Antiques.

The phone booth is now being repaired, along with Chris Bonatti's window, which is covered with bars in the meantime.

"They just tapped the glass, stuck their hand through and latched it," he said.

Summer beckons. School’s out.

The fun factor rises as we plan to enjoy our favorite outdoor activities. But all the action sometimes leads to accidents as I found out the hard way last July 17.

This electronic town crier broke his neck in two places in a freak Union Avenue car wreck. While I didn’t need a blood transfusion after an unfortunate collision, I easily could have found myself facing that scenario. We just never know the day or the hour when we’ll count on the forward thinking people who take time out to donate blood on a regular basis.
