Midtown residents say hawks attacking small pets

MEMPHIS, TN-(WMC-TV) – An e-mail is circulating amongst Midtown Memphis warning them to watch out for hawks attacking small animals.

Midtown resident Donna Karney said Friday her Chihuahua Moby was seconds away from being picked up and taken away this past summer.

"This huge hawk flew down from the wire or something, and my husband had been seeing it up there, and it just flew down and the dog never saw it," said Karney.

Karney and her husband walked outside just in time to see the bird hovering over Moby.  At 10 years old and toothless, Karney said Moby does not have much fight in him.

"This huge bird almost picked up our dog, so there are some big birds in Midtown and they will swoop down and take your pets," said Karney.

Moby is not the only animal to catch a hawk's eyes.  An e-mail chain being circulated shows the issue of big birds attacking animals is not just in her neighborhood.

'Soup Sunday' Serves Up Love for Youth Villages

"It's amazing what soup can do," say the good folks at Campbell's Soup. The catchy phrase will ring true at the 23rd annual "Soup Sunday" at FedExForum from 11am to 2pm on Sunday, February 19th. The event will unite generous, big-hearted Mid-Southerners with hearty soups, gumbos and other delicacies from many of Memphis' leading restaurants. The end result will be a splendid fund raiser for the mentoring program at Youth Villages, one of America's leading service agencies in the care of young people.  Specifically, the monies raised by Soup Sunday will help ensure that children in Foster Care receive mentoring from adults who volunteer through Youth Villages. The funds will pay for training volunteer mentors, some group activities, and other costs associated with the program. Soup Sunday raised $45,000 last year through the admission price of $20 for adults and $10 for children paid at the door.

What's behind that restaurant's health score

Despite reporting Mid-South restaurants' health inspection scores every Thursday on Andy's Restaurant Scorecard, I continue to meet viewers who don't know restaurants are required to post those scores, whether it's Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas.

Establishments must post those scores someplace where customers can see them:  the entrance, cash register, bar, etc.

If they don't, it's a health code violation.

Mississippi's health department uses a letter-grade system:  A, B, C. No failures. They are white reports with large, green grades. Restaurants typically frame them for public inspection.

The restaurant inspectors of the Arkansas Department of Health don't employ a grading system at all. They just list the violations.

MPD, MCS meet after deadly shooting

MEMPHIS, TN-

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police and Memphis City Schools officials teamed up to talk security Tuesday. Both groups are making sure they're doing everything possible to keep students safe after a 17-year-old was shot and killed after a basketball game at school.

MPD and MCS officials met Tuesday morning and by the afternoon had publicly acknowledged that they botched the release of information following the murder of a teenager after a Central High School basketball game this weekend.

As for the shooting, they said it's an isolated incident they couldn't have stopped.

"I am confident that MCS has procedures in place that, in conjunction with the efforts of the Memphis Police Department, is solid as it relates to the safety and security of our youth," said Toney Armstrong, Memphis police director.
